3) An Auxiliary OR Helping verb:
An auxiliary verb is that verb which helps the principal verb to form its tense, voice or mood. OR and auxiliary verb helps the main verb and completes its meanings.
Helping verbs are of Two Categories:
A) to be (is, am , are ,was, were, has, have, had,)
B) Modal auxiliaries or modals: do, does, did, shall, should, will, would, can could, may, might, must, ought.
For Example:
They are Reading books.
i am doing my work.
He is is playing football.
He could not win the match.
We had completed work in time.
In these sentences ,is are,am could, had are use as a Helping verb.

The Gerund:
A verb that is use as noun is called a gerund. A gerund is derived from a verb by adding ‘ing’ with it.
For Example:
Write __________Writing
Ride___________Riding
Teach__________Teacher
Drink__________Drinking
Note: Gerund is also use as a subject: as the following examples show;
Riding is enjoyable
Teaching is a very noble profession.
Note: When gerund is use in the middle of a sentence it always has a preposition with it.
For example:
He is afraid of riding a horse.
my younger brother is fond of swimming.
They were sorry for being late.
The little girl has learnt writing.
